Rue is the character whose death incites the action necessary for rebellion to finally, fully begin in the first novel. Because of this an analysis of the origin of her name can give us more evidence for this purpose and help us better characterize her (given the short time we have with her character in the novel).

this definition feels most obvious to me and has since my first read as kid. maybe this is because it's the first definition that comes up on google, but it's unfortunatley more likely because of that one icarly episode... you know what i'm talking about:
